The second-generation camera module replaced a 5-megapixel sensor with the Sony IMX219, a high-quality 8-megapixel chip that is also used in phones. It connects with a flat ribbon cable to the dedicated CSI port, so it leaves USB free and does not load the processor.
Time-lapse photography of a plant or a 3D print, a doorbell or a wildlife camera, a security camera with motion detection, computer vision experiments with OpenCV and TensorFlow Lite. The software libraries (libcamera, Picamera2) make still images, video and raw capture a few lines of Python.
The lens is fixed focus, set from about one metre to infinity, which is perfect for most monitoring tasks. Mounting holes allow attaching the module to cases and tripods.
